Der Turbostar war europaweit ein großer kommerzieller Erfolg für den italienischen Hersteller Iveco. Dank seiner Zuverlässigkeit und Leistungsfähigkeit war der LKW Ende der 1980er-Jahre das am weitesten verbreitete Industriefahrzeug in Italien. Besonders beliebt war die Version mit Planendeck, die eine große Flexibilität beim Gütertransport bot. Um die Be- und Entladetätigkeiten zu verbessern, wurde der Planenversion oft eine hydraulische Heckplattform hinzugefügt. Inspiriert ist der Geländeklassiker – wenn auch nicht direkt ¬– vom amerikanischen Jeep. Er zeichnete sich durch 4x4-Allradantrieb und eine robuste und zuverlässige Struktur aus, mit der er die schwierigsten und anspruchsvollsten Strecken bewältigen konnte. Die Karosserie aus Aluminium machte den Land Rover leichter und gleichzeitig korrosionsbeständiger sowie langlebiger. Als 1971 die Serie III eingeführt wurde, waren bereits mehr als eine Million Einheiten gebaut worden, sowohl in der 88-Zoll-Version mit Standard-Radstand als auch in der 109-Zoll-Version mit langem Radstand.
