Global Applications of Culturally Competent Health Care: Guidelines for Practice. Dr. Marilyn Marty K. Douglas, PhD, RN, FAAN earned her PhD (International and Cross Cultural Nursing) from the University of California, San Francisco, where she is currently Clinical Professor. Dr. Douglas served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Transcultural Nursing for 15 years and co-edited the Core Curriculum for Transcultural Nursing and Health Care. She chaired the American Academy of Nurses (AAN) Task Force that developed the Guidelines for Culturally Competent Nursing Practice, which ultimately were endorsed by the International Council of Nurses. She also worked with the American Nurses Association to develop a new standard of practice, Cultural Congruent Practice. Dr. Dula F. Pacquiao, EdD, RN, CTN-A, TNS obtained her EdD (Anthropology) from Rutgers University. She served as a Senior Editor of the Journal of Transcultural Nursing, the co-editor of the Core Curriculum for Transcultural Nursing and Health Care, co-author of the TCN certification exam, and member of the AAN Task Force on Guidelines for Culturally Competent Nursing Practice. She established two academic training centres for multidisciplinary students and healthcare professionals, which focus on culturally competent care and social determinants of health in vulnerable populations. She assisted in the development of the U.S. Office of Minority Health's Culturally Competent Curriculum for Nurses and the National Quality Forum's Framework for Culturally Competent Practice. Dr. Larry D. Purnell, PhD, RN, FAAN obtained a PhD (Health Service Administration) from Columbia Pacific University. He served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Transcultural Nursing and a member of the AAN Task Force on Standards of Culturally Competent Nursing Practice. He developed one of the most popular models for cultural competence, the Purnell Model for Cultural Competence, which has been translated into 10 languages. He has been a prolific author on thetopic of culture.

She studied Advanced Practice at the University of Pennsylvania, USA, and received her PhD from the European Institute Medical Health Sciences, University of Surrey, UK, and her master's medical science degree and baccalaureate in nursing at University College Dublin. She is currently Director of the MSc Advanced Pain Management /Prescriptive Authority Program, Diploma Pain Management, a Professional Certificate in Pain Management, and a Diploma in Diabetes Care at University College Dublin. Professor O'Connor is one of the co-directors representing nursing and midwifery at the UCD Centre for Translational Pain Research (CTPR). The UCD CTPR has strong multidisciplinary collaborative links with colleagues and other academic institutions in Ireland, England, Japan and the USA. She is Principal Investigator on a national funded project 'An independent evaluation study to determine the impact of measuring nursing and midwifery-sensitive process metrics and indicators using Quality Care-Metrics' across seven areas of practice: acute care, public health nursing, children's, mental health, older person, intellectual disability nursing and midwifery. Genomics of Pain and Co-Morbid Symptoms. Susan G. Dorsey, PhD RN FAAN, is a professor of nursing and chair in the Department of Pain and Translational Symptom Science, at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. She received her PhD from the University of Maryland, Baltimore and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Cancer Institute in the Mouse Cancer Genetics Program. She holds secondary faculty appointments in the School Of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology and the School Of Dentistry's Neural & Pain Sciences Department. She co-directs the campus-wide Center to Advance Chronic Pain Research and serves as a Multiple Principal Investigator (MPI) for a newly awarded NINR-funded P30 Center, Omics Associated with Self-management Interventions for Symptoms (OASIS). In 2015, Dr. Dorsey was appointed as a translational research expert on the NCI Symptoms and Quality of Life Steering Committee and served as co-chair for the 2017 NCI Clinical Trials Planning Meeting for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. Dr. Dorsey's translational program of research incorporates molecular, cellular and genetic/genomic methods to study chronic pain and cancer treatment-related neuropathic pain and related symptoms. Angela Starkweather is an acute care nurse practitioner and neuroscience nurse with 20 years of experience managing pain in acute and urgent care settings, who has devoted her career toward identifying the physiological mechanisms of persistent pain and developing personalized methods to mitigate pain and its detrimental consequences. The impact of her research has led to innovative self-management strategies for patients and families dealing with pain and other distressing symptoms. She has been funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research for the past 10 years and serves as the Director of the Center for Accelerating Precision Pain Self-Management at the University of Connecticut School of Nursing. She is past-Chair of the Genomic Nursing andHealth Care Expert Panel of the American Academy of Nursing, and serves as an Ambassador of the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research, and standing member of the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses Clinical Practice Guidelines Board.
